Although we know that extended exposure to the sun can be damaging to the skin, there are major health benefits to moderate sun bathing. In this time of self-quarantine you may be spending a lot more time indoors and less time outdoors, which can be detrimental to your health and mood. The sun provides Vitamin D and simply makes us happy.

We all grew up knowing that Calcium was good for our bones but what we didn't know is that Vitamin D facilitates the absorption of Calcium in our bodies. In short, Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones and teeth. 

You might be wondering, "why can't I just take Vitamin D supplements"? Well, sunlight boosts a chemical and neurotransmitter in your brain know as serotonin. Serotonin makes us happy, keep us calm and positive, and even increases our sex drive. During uncertain times like these we need serotonin more than ever.

We suggest that you enjoy the sun between 10am and 3pm without sunscreen for about 5-10 mins (lighter shades) and 10-15 mins (darker shades) to allow your skin to absorb UV-B rays. Be sure to protect your eyes and follow up with a sunscreen of at least 30-SPF or higher.

If you have a backyard, take advantage of it! Get to cleaning that yard or get started on an herb garden. Otherwise, go for a hike or even a short stroll in your neighborhood, you'll be sure to feel a lot better.

*While getting your sunshine supply, be sure to keep the recommended distance from others to help stop the spread of the virus.
